With the release of vSphere 6. From there I created a new VM and installed Windows…this took about two hours to complete which I knew was not as I had expected…especially with the datastore being a decent class SSD.

I thought to myself if I had bought a lemon of a storage controller and checked the Queue Depth of the card. Again referencing the VMware Compatability Guide the listed driver for the conrtoller the device driver is listed as ahci version 3.

I searched for the installed device driver modules and found that the one listed above was present, however there was also a native VMware device drive as well. After the host rebooted I checked to see if the storage controller was using the device driver listed in the compatability guide. As you can see below not only was it using that driver, but it was now showing the six HBA ports as opposed to just the one seen in the first snippet above.

I once again created a new VM and installed Windows and this time the install completed in a little under five minutes! Quiet a difference! Upon running a crystal disk mark I was now getting the expected speeds from the SSDs and things are moving along quiet nicely. Hopefully this post saves anyone else who might by this, or other SuperMicro SuperServers some time and not get caught out by poor storage performance caused by the native VMware driver packaged with ESXi 6.

Released: vSAN 6.Every now and then, we do something rather awesome. Like sponsoring a homelab giveaway. I truly love helping the Veeam Team come up with ideas for this type of program, and this iteration is no exception.

We are giving away an ultimate home and cloud lab to end the year. This homelab giveaway promotion will include cloud credits for AWS or Azure; to really provide IT pros an opportunity to grow and modernize their skills.

This is some serious homelabbing! This is the case for me in my personal IT journey, and when we look at what is the right way to approach this inthe cloud has to be part of the strategy.

I remember the first time we did a homelab giveaway, it was in-person at a VMworld and wow what a showing. Here is a view of that from a few years ago:. Since then, we learned a lot on how to give homelabs away.

For one, maybe the winner already has parts of a homelab in place. Maybe they have a particular preference to a Veeam partner for their hardware. Maybe there is a preference for performance versus capacity in regard to storage. Inside of that shipment will be a great kit to learn and grow. The good news is that there are going to be three winners. One will be a winner with a homelab and cloud credits, but there are going to be two other winners exclusively for cloud credits.

This is your opportunity to grow in your career and our opportunity to give back to the IT community. Go ahead and register for the promotionbut hurry up as it ends on December 31!

Part-way through the mass interview a man walks to the front of the room and asks if anyone has ever used Linux.

He takes me out of the interview for the lab assistant job, introduces me to the department director. They took me out to lunch. By the end of the day I had my first job as a Systems Administrator. Learn things on your own and it will broaden your opportunities. One of the best ways to learn about systems, applications, and technology is starting a homelab. A Homelab can give you an enjoyable, low stress, practical way to learn technology.

A homelab will also help you find out the technical areas in which you are interested. It is a place outside of the corporate environment for your personal projects, growth, and a fun hobby. While not all homelab projects lead to professional development, many of them do. The homelab environment for most technologists consists of one or more servers running a virtualization environment and a storage solution to support various virtual servers providing services.

Specialty home labs can also be built e. The most essential piece of equipment will be your router. The main reason I started my homelab was storage. I was taking a lot of family pictures and videos and wanted to save them.

I needed faster storage with more IOPS. One of the best Homelab storage solutions is ZFS. FreeNAS has done a great job at technology convergence. This is now marketed as hyper-converged storage. All of it is completely free. A few years after I learned ZFS for home, my employer was looking for a new storage solution so having this knowledge and experience was helpful. Virtualization allows you to run multiple virtual servers on the same piece of hardware.

But you can learn most of the concepts and features of VMware. I consider VMware my basic infrastructure. From there you can learn about other things like networking, storage, and play with any OS or Linux distribution you want to. Proxmox VE is another popular hypervisor—I run it in my homelab. I have a preference for Proxmox.

Fortunately if you use VMware you can leverage it to use virtual network switches. For physical switches I really like the Unifi products. They are simple enough for non-network engineers like me. Everything can be configured using the GUI. Unifi exposes you to managed switches, central management with the Unifi controllerVLANs, and PoE Power over Ethernetport trunking, port mirroring, redundant paths with spanning tree, etc. I started with this little UniFi 8-port switch 4 are PoE ports.

In a homelab you may not need to go crazy on VLANs, but separating your main network from your IoT devices may be prudent. Having a robust wireless setup is also a necessity for a homelab. If you have a large house you get to set up multiple APs and make sure they can handoff connections. These are managed by the same Unifi controller as the switches.

I have written more about Unifi Equipment here.May 08 Update - The detailed video is finally herewith very handy chapter markers below! This new video was recorded on April 19th, and was edited down to about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Win the ULTIMATE home and cloud lab for 2020

It's a detailed step-by-step video, geared toward those who want nice hostnames in a home lab. If you want a simpler approach, choose this earlier, shorter vSphere 6.

It demonstrates the easier IPs rather than host names procedure. Also note that we're all still waiting to see what happens with day licenses for vSphere 6. Aug 24 Update - The 6. Sep 26 Update - The 6. Nov 24 Update - Status of vSphere 6.

I'm working hard on the full recipe for success, to build up your vSphere 6. Note, while I say fresh install, that doesn't mean you are starting from scratch, if you have existing VMs.

Those can easily be added back into your inventory, once you get your vSphere 6. Overall, vSphere 6. Installing ESXi 6. This recipe for all the ingredients you'll need for your own awesome home lab setup will be soup-to-nuts thorough, with a focus on simplicity, ease of deployment, and ease of use. Once you see the video, it's all so much more straightforward than all the documentation implies. Alternatively, I may just go with the vcsa-cli-installer method.

One barrier has been lack of valid documentation this early on. For example, here's a VMware document that hasn't yet been updated since the 5. Yep, that ain't right, they simply haven't updated it for 6.

But you don't have to wait until I have the recipe fully documented, and the solution fully baked. Especially if you're just messing around and plan to rebuild from scratch. Keep reading! My revised completely new video includes install, and configure, with a twist. Yes, it's all about that home network WiFi router, which doesn't do the forward and reverse lookups that VMware expects in the datacenter. The work arounds are fairly straight-forward, but not as easy as I would have liked.

Here it is, the detailed, step-by-step video that gets you an awesome home virtualization lab, with lovely names like esxi and vcenter, rather than ugly IPs. Well, the video is intended to be followed from start to finish, but I realize it's still awfully handy to figure out where you left off by having all the chapters nicely laid out for you.

And those Realtek NICs. I want people to have the proper expectations about this video, which admittedly has some constraints. Hopefully this polite warning I have inserted into the video at 1 minute conveys the right message:.

This video is geared toward experienced PC enthusiasts who may be new to VMware vSphere, and want to either create a new lab, or rebuild their existing VMware lab, re-importing existing VMs.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.
