I think isopropyl alcohol is one of the most underrated tools in the home, so today I want to share with you why rubbing alcohol is better for cleaning than many other items. While vinegar is a great acid that can clean build up like coffee makers, steam clean the microwaveor loosen up carpet stainsit is not a registered disinfectant. I highly recommend checking out our complete guide on vinega r to learn how to use it properly! So, I use vinegar strictly for removing build up, but rubbing alcohol for disinfecting and cleaning most places especially the kitchen.
Isopropyl alcohol was invented in the s and has been available for home use since the s or so. When Standard Oil made this productchemists realized that it had unique household properties that could make it a wonder chemical for health and home.
Oddly enough, rubbing alcohol was first used in World War I to prepare smokeless repellent! Since rubbing alcohol is capable of sterilizing and disinfecting surfaces in your home, it is one of the cheapest options for safe cleaners. In fact, it is the key ingredient in one of my favorite all-purpose cleaners from the eBook. This cleaner has the capacity to clean the entire kitchen, remove stains, freshen fabrics, and can even be used to kill insects inside.
All thanks to the isopropyl alcohol found inside. This cleaner is on page 13 in the book. Another chemical property that makes rubbing alcohol so effective is how volatile it is. This means it will evaporate quickly without leaving a residue. Most store-bought cleaners are comprised of many different alcohols for this reason. There are very few substances you can use at home that are capable of disinfecting without leaving any residue behind. While rubbing alcohol is safe for all surfaces, be sure to test out wood, painted surfaces, etc.
It is always important to test things before using. You can clean stainless steel with rubbing alcohol to leave a nice shine. It not only disinfects, but cleans up any residue. If you have a set in sweat stain or dirt stain, saturate the area in rubbing alcohol and dab off. Then wash it with normal soap and water. This does great at getting stains up from the fabric. Rubbing alcohol does a great job of getting up the waxy residue left from crayons or markers. Especially on walls with a painted texture.
This is my favorite tip for rubbing alcohol. Many cleaners leave a bad residue on blinds, especially wooden ones like I have. The alcohol will dissolve dust well and does not leave a residue or water marks behind. Alcohol is the best for removing sticky residue, especially hairspray.

We have a mysterious smell, like a skunk that comes and goes and not always in the same room.
Sometimes it is in the hallway, other times near one of our fireplaces, sometimes in the stairwell, and these areas are separated by as much as 50 ft. Most of the time we smell it in the evening. We live in the country, so the first time we smelled it we thought a skunk was outside, very near the house, but we don't smell it outside.
I've heard people say electrical wires can make that smell. Others say it could be drain water. Does anyone have an answer? You may have a skunk that had babies! This could be why you smell it in different area's? You might want to get an exterminator in to check this out. Good luck! I have skunk problems too!
Jan 25,AM. Skunks do like to tunnel under and into homes. I had one who came up under the bath tub drain on a slab foundation. This is not an easy fix and you might be wise to get a pro for some estimates. Based on what the pro says you can better decide if you can tackle it yourself.

I don't know what ammonia smells like, but maybe that's the kind of smell it is, because I found a lot of results when I searched that. But I'm so danged confused! I basically am striving closer to 'paleo' so to speak, which is, I no longer eat any sugar except natural occurring ones in fruits and a little bit of milk, and I'm cutting out most grains.
Today for the first time I actually didn't eat grains. I had a little salmon and vegetables for lunch, and a burger but with a bun for dinner. I did a hard jog. And then I had that weird smell.
I read it's from 'low carb diets'. And to 'eat more carbs'. But if it's true that wheat isn't the best thing for you, and is hardly necessary considering our human history, what in the world does that smell mean? Is it a bad thing? It gives me the impression that I ran out of carbs to burn. Might burn fat then? Or is it bad, and I might burn muscle or something?
I do not drink a lot of water, that could be a factor. But what's up with that?? Share This Post With Others. Report Inappropriate Blog. It's been 6 months! Why don't fictional characters say "goodbye" when they hang up a phone? All Rights Reserved.

Wiki User Exactly what your nose responds to as a scent I cannot say, but the reason that some things seem to smell more or further away has much to do with how much of the substance is in the air that you are breathing.
Everything has a vapor pressure at any temperature above absolute zero. Vapor pressure is a way of stating how quicklya substance will become a vapor and thereby become airborne. Alcohol has a relatively high vapor pressure at any "normal" temperature and therefore is relatively quickly added to the air when a container of it is opened.
Its molecules also are movingrelativelyfast which is what causes a higher vapor pressure in the first place and that means that its smell will travel quickly throughout an area.
